CBIC Enhances AEO Programme Benefits — Faster Clearances and Higher Duty Deferment Limits

AEO Programme Upgraded: CBIC Adds Major Incentives for Compliant Traders

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued Circular No. 08/2026-Customs significantly upgrading the benefits under India's Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme. The AEO programme recognises and rewards traders who maintain high standards of compliance, security, and record-keeping in their supply chains.

Enhanced Benefits by AEO Tier

  • AEO-T1: Priority risk-based assessment, dedicated AEO facilitation counters at major ports, and faster release of goods against self-assessed bills of entry.
  • AEO-T2: All T1 benefits plus higher deferred duty payment (DDP) limits — duty payment deferred by up to 30 days without bank guarantee. Direct Port Delivery (DPD) and Direct Port Entry (DPE) facilitation enhanced.
  • AEO-T3: All T2 benefits plus self-ratification of Advance Authorisations, reduced frequency of physical examination (less than 2%), and a dedicated nodal officer at the jurisdictional Commissionerate.

New: Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)

India has recently concluded AEO Mutual Recognition Agreements with the USA (C-TPAT), South Korea, Taiwan, UAE, and Australia. This means AEO-certified Indian exporters enjoy expedited customs clearance in these countries, reducing dwell time and logistics costs in key export markets.

How to Apply for AEO Certification

AEO applications are submitted through the ICEGATE portal. The process involves self-assessment, document submission, and a CBIC site validation visit. Samarth EXIM provides full AEO application support — from pre-assessment gap analysis to post-certification compliance management.
